Katherine is recognised as the birthplace of Aboriginal Land Rights in Australia - with Katherine being the service hub for Kalkaringi, Dagaragu and Lajamanu - where Vincent Lingiari ceremoniously had his land returned by then Prime Minister Gough Whitlam.
